Tu n\u2019as eu conscience que de deux choses: ta fatigue et ton r\u00e9veil quelques heures plus tard. Ce dont tu ne te rends pas compte, c\u2019est que tu traverses plusieurs phases pendant ton sommeil. Alors qu\u2019il se passe plein de choses la nuit: quand on est en bonne sant\u00e9, les phases de sommeil lent l\u00e9ger et lent profond se succ\u00e8dent r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement pendant la premi\u00e8re moiti\u00e9 de la nuit, tandis que les phases de sommeil lent l\u00e9ger et paradoxal s\u2019encha\u00eenent pendant la seconde. Ce qui n\u2019a rien de d\u2019\u00e9tonnant, puisque c\u2019est la seule position dans laquelle nous pouvons nous d\u00e9tendre compl\u00e8tement. Si tu commences tout doucement \u00e0 somnoler, tu es dans la phase d\u2019endormissement. Pendant cette transition entre la veille et le sommeil, tes muscles se rel\u00e2chent. Mais tu te r\u00e9veilles encore facilement. Parall\u00e8lement, l\u2019activit\u00e9 \u00e9lectrique de ce dernier stimule le syst\u00e8me de communication, de m\u00eame que la capacit\u00e9 d\u2019apprentissage et de m\u00e9morisation. Tes muscles se d\u00e9tendent davantage, ton contact avec l\u2019environnement s\u2019affaiblit. Tes fr\u00e9quences cardiaque et respiratoire sont \u00e9galement plus lentes qu\u2019\u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9tat de veille. Tu es maintenant en phase de transition vers le sommeil profond. C\u2019est aussi celle pendant laquelle il arrive que tes muscles tressaillent. Ta respiration et ton rythme cardiaque ralentissent, ta tension art\u00e9rielle et ta temp\u00e9rature corporelle baissent. En anglais, le sommeil lent profond s\u2019appelle d\u2019ailleurs le \u00abslow wave sleep\u00bb en raison de la lenteur des ondes c\u00e9r\u00e9brales. Si ton voisin le d\u00e9m\u00e9nageur amateur fait tomber un vase en d\u00e9pla\u00e7ant des meubles, tu te r\u00e9veilleras sans doute en sursaut et perplexe. Cette d\u00e9sorientation est tout \u00e0 fait normale pendant le sommeil lent profond.<\/p>\n<p>C\u2019est pendant cette phase que les faits et les \u00e9v\u00e9nements sont transf\u00e9r\u00e9s dans la m\u00e9moire \u00e0 long terme. Dans le m\u00eame temps, l\u2019\u00e9quilibre immunitaire et hormonal est r\u00e9tabli, ce qui est bon pour le processus de croissance et de r\u00e9cup\u00e9ration du corps. C\u2019est l\u00e0 que tu r\u00eaves et que tes muscles se d\u00e9tendent compl\u00e8tement\u00a0\u2013 c\u2019est important, parce que \u00e7a \u00e9vite qu\u2019ils effectuent les mouvements de ton r\u00eave. Tes yeux, en revanche, bougent rapidement. C\u2019est de l\u00e0 que vient l\u2019abr\u00e9viation REM (rapid eye movement, c.-\u00e0-d. mouvement oculaire rapide). Si tu te r\u00e9veilles pendant la phase de sommeil paradoxal, il est tr\u00e8s probable que tu te souviennes parfaitement de ton r\u00eave.<\/p>\n<p>Beaucoup de gens se demandent si le sommeil paradoxal est important. Oui, il l\u2019est! Parce que cette phase de sommeil permet de traiter les souvenirs, de r\u00e9guler les \u00e9motions et de renforcer le syst\u00e8me immunitaire. Dans le meilleur des cas, si tu peux dormir suffisamment et que rien ne vient te d\u00e9ranger, tu passes alternativement par les phases de sommeil lent l\u00e9ger et lent profond pendant la premi\u00e8re moiti\u00e9 de la nuit. Il est donc important de passer par toutes, sans quoi la qualit\u00e9 et l\u2019efficacit\u00e9 du sommeil en p\u00e2tissent.<\/p>\n<p>Si elles sont interrompues, il arrive que des fonctions importantes ne puissent plus \u00eatre men\u00e9es \u00e0 leur terme, ce qui peut se traduire par une fatigue en journ\u00e9e, une baisse des performances cognitives et une instabilit\u00e9 \u00e9motionnelle. \u00c0 la longue, les interruptions excessives peuvent perturber le rythme naturel de l\u2019organisme et provoquer des troubles du sommeil. Des phases de sommeil compl\u00e8tes sont donc d\u00e9terminantes pour que le corps et l\u2019esprit r\u00e9cup\u00e8rent. Notre sant\u00e9 et notre productivit\u00e9 au quotidien en d\u00e9pendent.<\/p>\n<p>C\u2019est aussi pour \u00e7a qu\u2019il est essentiel de dormir suffisamment. Une personne en bonne sant\u00e9 dort en moyenne 7\u00a0heures par nuit. Si tu ne dors pas assez, tu passeras compl\u00e8tement \u00e0 c\u00f4t\u00e9 du sommeil de la deuxi\u00e8me partie de la nuit.
